For “Singer and Songs” Dick van Altena has teamed up, once again, with a stellar cast of Dutch country instrumentalists. One of the highlights is a duet with (co-writer) Billy Yates.
Not even in Holland many people know that Dick van Altena is one of the most successful and looked for songwriters in his own country. He has written songs, mostly on request, for renowned Dutch artists like Henk Wijngaard, Mooi Wark, Toni Willé (‘Pussycat’), De Sjonnies and Saskia & Serge.
He is often called the Dutch equivalent of Kris Kristofferson. But, although definitely inspired by his writing and performance, Dick is far too modest to compare himself with Kristofferson or with any of his other musical heroes for that matter.
Starting his career as frontman and writer for the hugely popular Major Dundee Band, Dick has developed a very personal and intimate touch to his lyrics. But as with Shel Silverstein, another favorite, humour is always just around the corner.
Since a couple of years Dick mostly works solo, although for special events he will invite musical friends to the stage. He certainly will for the (all sold out) Jubilee Shows later this year where he celebrates “1094 songs in 40 years of songwriting”. A set of events that will reflect the versatility of van Altena’s work. As on his most recent CD releases, they will feature and highlight his Dutch-, his country- and his (Betuws) dialect songs.
