Lead single is Land of the Hummingbird, recorded in Tucson, sung in English and Spanish, a duet with Guatemalan singer songwriter Gaby Moreno, and a co-write with XIXA's Gabriel Sullivan.
A quartet of songs, on the dark side, infused with the great Southwestern deserts, with mysterious women at their heart! The sultry, seductive groove of Land of the Hummingbird, 2 out and out rockers in Dolina and She Was A Raven (where everything lets rip!), and a more reflective, mood on Ashes And Dust, contemplating mortality.
Ashes And Dust was recorded long distance with Calexico members in USA inc the mighty John Convertino on drums and Martin Wenk (on trumpet, in Berlin). The rest were recorded at WaveLab Studio in Tucson AZ, with the full Calexico band (including Joey Burns) in full-on technicolour desert rock mode.
1.Land Of The Hummingbird(Dean Owens/Gabriel Sullivan) Featuring Gaby MorenoA little work of fiction that I always heard being sung in Spanish in my head, and which I co-wrote with my Tucson friend Gabriel Sullivan (XIXA/Giant Sand). It was so amazing having Gaby Moreno sing in Spanish on the recording of this song.Dean Owens – vocals, nylon string guitarGaby Moreno – vocals, BVsJoey Burns – upright bassJohn Convertino – drumsSergio Mendoza – piano, percussionNaïmAmor – electric guitar
2.Dolina(Dean Owens)I often keep a note of interesting names. These could be people I’ve met or characters in a book. Dolina was one of these names. I’d been experimenting with some writing techniques when the tale of Dolina came to me.Dean Owens – vocals, nylon string guitar, BVsJoey Burns – upright bass, electric guitarJohn Convertino – drumsSergio Mendoza – piano, percussionJacob Valenzuela – trumpetNaïmAmor – electric guitar
3.Ashes & Dust(Dean Owens)This is another song that came out of my experimentation with writing techniques. I was aiming to capture a dark, mysterious mood on this one.Dean Owens – vocals, nylon string guitar, electric guitar, BVsJohn Convertino – drumsKevin McGuire – upright bassNaïmAmor – electric guitarMartin Wenk – trumpet
4.She Was A Raven(Dean Owens/Gabriel Sullivan)This is an alternative take on Land Of The Hummingbird and was all Joey’s idea. He wanted to try a completely different approach to the song with a slight 60’s feel.
