about

1. The Hopeless Ghosts (Dean Owens) – featuring Grant Lee Phillips
Inspired by something the late great Townes Van Zandt said about his songs. When asked in an interview why they were so sad he replied that he had a few that weren’t sad, that they were just hopeless, about hopeless situations. It really stuck with me and that’s what gave me the idea for the line – I follow in the footsteps of the hopeless ghosts. I was over the moon that my friend Grant Lee Phillips offered to sing on this with me. I love Grant’s voice.

2. Mother Road (Dean Owens)
I wrote this about an old barber, Angel Degadillo, who has a shop in the town of Seligman on Route 66 – The Mother Road. Now 93 years old, he’s witnessed all the changes along and around that famous old road.

3. Even When I’m Gone (Dean Owens)
A simple ‘hopeless’ love song that came to me on one of my many walks with my old dog Alfie, through the woods near my home in Edinburgh. I think I’m trying to channel a wee bit of Townes here too.

4. The End (Dean Owens)
A murder ballad I wrote for Johnny Cash to sing, but seeing as the great Man in Black had already passed on, I thought I’d better do it myself.
