about

No Depression: 'Holy Mackerel! I think Gruppo Sportivo died and came back to life as The Claudettes! You remember Gruppo Sportivo, don't you? That late-seventies, early-eighties band out of Holland which would have turned the record “industry” on its ears if the damn “industry” had had ears?"

The Claudettes were formed in Chicago by
Johnny Iguana, piano player on the
Grammy-nominated albums "Chicago Blues:
A Living History" and "Muddy Waters 100"
and organist in the punk-organ band oh my
god. After two mostly instrumental albums
on Yellow Dog Records. Johnny re-formed
the Claudettes with singer Berit Ulseth,
drummer Matt Torre and singer/bassist
Zach Verdoorn in early 2016. Tour dates and
more on the Claudettes' website.

"Haunted cabaret...David Lynch movie music crossed
with Allen Toussaint's driving piano sound! And sort
of like when you're driving late at night in the South
and two radio stations are coming in together and it's
PERFECT!...Like Otis Spann and Mark Sandman from
Morphine sitting in with Keely Smith..I'm kind of riffing
here but seriously nobody sounds like them...I love
this new record, it's crazy good."
--Producer Mark Neill
"A revelatory blend of jazz and blues, stirred with punk brio. There are also dashes of classical and world
music, and enough stops, starts and hairpin turns to suggest the giddiness of Raymond Scott's cartoon
music...How do they do it?" --Greg Kot, Chicago Tribune
